The University of North Dakota, commonly known as UND, is a public university in Grand Forks, which is the 3rd largest city in North Dakota state, as well as the county seat of Grand Forks County. During the census of 2008, the city’s population was estimated at a number of little over 51 000 inhabitants, and nearly 98 000 were living in the metropolitan area.
UND was founded in 1883, 6 years before North Dakota became a state, with the help of George H. Walsh, a native who submitted a bill to the Territorial Legislature of Dakota Territory, asking for the new state of North Dakota’s university to be located in Grand Forks.
Today, UND is recognized as the oldest university in North Dakota, and it is known as having a strong liberal arts foundation. To its enrolment of more than 13 000 students, the university offers a wide variety of specialized and professional programs, including the only medicine and law schools in the state.
According to the Carnegie Foundation, UND is a doctoral/research-intensive institution, being also recognized world-wide as a space grant institution. In 2006, the UND students have revealed a new space suit that they were working one for over a year, which may one day travel to Mars, development which was sponsored by NASA.
The athletic teams from UND are known as the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, who compete in NCAA Division I, including the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, for hockey, and in the in the Great West Conference, for all other sports. The university also has a cycling team, which is part of USA Cycling’s North Central Collegiate Cycling Conference.
The men’s hockey team has won 7 national championships, and the football team, which plays the home games at the Alerus Center, has won the Division II national championship in 2001. The women’s team from UND has also won 3 national championships: in ’97, ’98, and ’99, and many UND notable alumni have played in the NHL.
